May Sunday School Focus: Jesus' Ascension
The Story: Luke 24:36-53; Acts 1:2-11
The Key/Memory Verse: Acts 1:9b "As they were watching, he was lifted up,
and a cloud took him out of their sight."
Goals/Objectives
Students will be able to:
- locate the story of Jesus' Ascension in the New Testament books of Luke and Acts (Older students will learn that Luke and Acts were written by the same author.)
- realize that Jesus' Ascension into heaven took place after forty days of appearances by the risen Christ to his disciples and followers;
- learn that Jesus gave a promise to His followers that the Holy Spirit would come to empower them
- understand that Jesus' Ascension is a departure of the physically resurrected Jesus, but it prepares us for Christ's presence in a new way, in and through us
- know that God's mission to tell everyone about Jesus' life, death, and resurrection was entrusted to Christ's followers -- the disciples then and to us now
- realize that we are still waiting for Jesus' return, known as the Second Coming.
Summary
"The Ascension of Christ" refers to the risen Jesus' departure into heaven after his post-resurrection appearances to his disciples. This departure fulfills the prophecy discussed by Jesus with Moses and Elijah at the Transfiguration. It also makes possible God's pouring out of the
Holy Spirit at Pentecost, empowering the disciples to continue Jesus' ministry. Finally, it prefigures Jesus' return at the end of the age.
Activity Centers
ART: Make and Decorate Kites to fly high into the sky.
COOKING: Cloud Cookies - reminding us that Jesus was lifted up into the sky.
GAMES: Prayer Balloons - writing our prayers and sending them into the sky through helium balloons.
SCIENCE: Making "Ooblek" - is it a solid or a liquid?
THOU ART –Arts and Crafts (Room 107)
In this center children are able to use their artistic gifts to relate to the story. Whether making paper flowers, mosaic frames, votive candle holders or collages, this is always a creative room!
MATTER OF FAITH - Cooking & Science (Jenkins Hall)
Whether preparing food or working on science experiments, this center is a favorite for our children. Would you like to make and eat mozzarella cheese? How about creating a working water fountain? The children never want to leave!
PARABLE PRODUCTIONS - Drama (Room 121)
This is one of our most popular workshops! The children can explore the Bible story by acting out scenes using costumes and props, or by producing their own puppet show. Definitely a favorite.
SAMSON’S GYM – Fun and Games (Room 118)
Everyone loves to play games! In this center it may be a board game, a crossword puzzle or an active relay race. Lots of laughter and excitement as the children live the stories through active play.
Every child has the opportunity to participate in each activity. Each month we study a different Bible story and the activities change to support the lesson.
